The Senior girls in 2008-09 will be focusing their fundraising efforts for the charity Save the Children.
Changing children’s lives in Southern Sudan
This exciting new project is linked to Rewrite - a global campaign focusing on securing quality education for the millions of children out of school due to war and armed conflict. One of the main factors preventing children accessing schools is the lack of boreholes and latrines in both bush schools and the newly built schools.
Heathfield School will be contributing to Save the Children’s Water, Sanitation & Hygiene Education Project, supporting schools in the Northern Bahr Ghazal State. The project has five aims:
- In collaboration with the Sudanese Ministry of Health & Education, five schools with the worst public heath indicators and high number of students, in the Awiel East County will be identified.
- Appropriate water and sanitation facilities will be provided for these schools.
- Teachers will be trained to provide more creative and innovative methods of promoting health & hygiene in the classroom.
- School management bodies will be trained on the basic principles of healthy living & promotion of health.
- They will establish & train a Water User Committee, so that they have acceptable standards of use and maintenance of the water sanitation systems provided.
Last year, the girls helped Wings of Hope a charity that supported poor and orphaned children around the world, irrespective of their religious background, by providing them with free education. Teams of students raised money by organising events such as walks and fashion shows.
Each year the whole school undertakes a sponsored fundraising event together. A highly successful Swim-a-thon was held in November which made a significant contribution to the expected total.
Other charities the school supports include the local hospice Michael Sobell House and Comic Relief was marked by a red themed mufti day, with some staff members dressing up.
The Headmistress, Christine Juett said,
“This project is a good example of social enterprise whereby entrepreneurial skills are introduced into the curriculum alongside a sense of service to others. The girls can develop creative and business skills whilst changing the lives of those less fortunate than themselves.”
